RED Project
There an estimated 1,080 people living in Kent County with HIV/AIDS. Approximately 260 of these people do not even know they have it. That is nearly 1 in 4, talk to your partners about HIV/AIDS and risk reduction options ... and get tested.

HIV is still on the rise in Kent County. In 2011 there were 42 confirmed new HIV/AIDS diagnoses. Know your options for prevention and testing. The Grand Rapids Red Project is a full service prevention organization, and the Kent County Health Department provides free rapid HIV testing.

Although advancement in treatment options help people with HIV/AIDS to live longer, treatment is still extremely difficult for many people. In addition, people living with HIV/AIDS experience stigma and discrimination in many aspects of their lives. Positive Choices is a monthly support group for people living with HIV/AIDS.

The Grand Rapids Red Project believes everyone should have access to knowledge and tools available to prevent HIV infection, and the treatment necessary to live with it, no matter who they are or where they are. In 2011, in addition to free information and education, The Grand Rapids Red Project distributed over 62,000 free condoms throughout the city of Grand Rapids.

HIV disproportionately affects communities of color, and other traditionally undeserved and marginalized populations. In 2011, while African Americans accounted for only 9% of the population in Kent County, they accounted for 34% of all HIV/AIDS cases. HIV does not exist in a vacuum and things such as socio-economic status, self-image, societal norms, and access to health related services play a role in whether an individual will contract the disease, and what sort of treatment they will get if they do.
